The Destination for Family Fun

There’s nothing like a classic kiwi family holiday. Singalongs and i-Spy on road trips, ice-cream and fish and chips on the beach, the feeling of warm sand sticking to your freshly sunblocked skin, outdoor walks and scenic discoveries, bad jokes and big smiles.

Taranaki is the perfect destination to show your kids what a true summer break is like. Only four and a half hours’ drive from Auckland and Wellington and three hours from Hamilton, we are just far enough away to get away from it all.

With a great range of accommodation, activities and attractions and eateries on offer, there are so many great memories to be had!

So what are you waiting for, book your getaway today and show your kids what a true summer looks like.

Accommodation:

Due to Taranaki’s sparkling beaches, rural vistas and magnificent mountain, there’s a range of different accommodation styles on offer. Here are five family-friendly accommodation offerings that you may wish to try:

  1. The Barn at Stoney Oaks Wildlife Park – set in a wildlife park just out of Inglewood, this rustic getaway is fantastic for animal-lovers

  2. Taranaki’s Holiday Parks – we have a great range of seaside holiday parks that offer playgrounds and other fun activities on top of units, motel cabins, camping sites and powered motorhome sites.

  3. Farmstay – Show your kids what rural life is like in Taranaki and stay at one of our delightful farmstays.

  4. Mountain huts – There’s the Stratford Mountain House where you can stay in luxury on the base of Mt Taranaki and if you are outdoor adventurers, why not take a sleeping bag and stay at a DoC mountain hut?

  5. Hotels and Motels – Taranaki has a number of fantastic hotels and motels which have everything from free bicycles, swimming pools and restaurants on site. The Devon Hotel in New Plymouth is home to Marbles Buffet, a Grecian themed buffet with a giant jellybean machine and where the waitstaff dance around the tables throughout the night.

Activities and Attractions:

The list is endless and the options are remarkably affordable. Here are five things you can do with the family for free or cheap in Taranaki:

  1. Go on a fairy hunt in the eerie Goblin Forest on the southern slopes of Egmont National Park

  2. Swim! Take your pick from our beaches, rivers, lakes and pools, but remember to slip, slop, slap, wrap and swim safely

  3. Go on a hunt for Taranaki’s big things – Inglewood’s fire engine, Eltham’s cheese, Hawera’s cow, Manaia’s bread, Opunake’s chainsaw, Oakura’s surfboard…

  4. Love horses, Elvis or gleaming art? Visit one of the region’s many magnificent museums and art galleries!

  5. See what you can find in the rock pools around the coast – from kina to starfish and all sorts of interesting aquatic sea life

Eateries:

Everyone has different taste, but here are five family favourites to get your mouth watering:

  1. Treat the family to fish and chips on the beach. Don’t forget the bread and sauce and wait 30mins after eating before you swim, just like your mum taught you

  2. New Plymouth has a lot of options – from American diners with extravagant icecream sundaes to sunny trailer cafes on the coastal walkway

  3. Head to Breakwater Bay where you’ll find a number of seaside eateries. While you’re there, hire a boat, kayak or snorkel and catch a fish!

  4. Take a look at our Must Do’s brochure – the locals have already voted for their favourite eats and drinks so download our brochure and take your pick from the region’s finest

  5. Mr Badger’s Café and the Shakee Pear Café are hits with families because they are adjoined to Tawhiti Museum and Pioneer Village. Great for keeping the kids going on a big day out!
